"Have you ever seen the rain ?"
When insomnia hits you early in the morning...
Aaron Hopper & ???

A young man stands in the covered playground. Playground ? There are no children playing around here. Just a bunch of lost humans, who think they can escape from this place, who adore the possibility of getting out and running away from the cold hard truth that they are not innocents anymore, that they have to grow up and accept their fate. But the institute is in the real world, and the only game everyone plays here is called Life. Just in case you don't know that, it's not a safe game. It's a hard game, which has some rules, but the game allows you to go against them, if you're daring enough to do that. But one of the most important rules of Life is that every action you make will have consequences, and every player has to keep that in mind. That's how some of the players ended locked up in the institute, because they did things, things that had consequences, and because, as grown ups, they have to assume them and take responsibility for what they do, but they tried to forget that, and it wasn't a wise move. Now, as humans, they are imperfect, and some of them haven't accepted that yet. Some like to believe they can pretend to be children their whole life, and it's going to work out for them, because they'll find a way to make it. That is the case of the young man standing against the wall.

See, this dark haired boy with a sombre appearance hasn't learned how to accept the truth of life yet ; he is still a young plant that has yet to grow. There remains a long way to go before he gets to his fully grown-self, and maybe he'll get lost in his way, maybe he won't even make it until the end of the way. These are questions that will only be answered with time, but doesn't it make this story much more interesting ? You should appreciate that the narrator doesn't give you all the answers and evolutions at the beginning of the story, and helps you work on your patience thanks to this.

Anyway, back to our young-not-fully-grown-man. His name is Aaron, and, on this cold morning of december, he is standing against the wall, looking outside. He prefers to stay in the covered part of the court, where he won't freeze to death, because the weather got really cold. We don't really know why he is here, and, to be honest, he doesn't really know either. He just decided to follow his instinct going wherever his feet would carry him, and ended up there. Why is he not sleeping in the dormitory the way he should, you say ? Well, he woke up early this morning, and decided to wander instead of trying to get back to sleep. "Classic.", the reader may say. "Yes.", I would answer.

As you may have noticed, our folk, additionally to being naive and thinking he can escape life, is also a very instinctive person. And, on this cold, cold day of december, his instinct was screaming "Get the hell out of this bed and walk through the corridors until you find a quiet place where you can think (and possibly fall asleep, because it's much more fun to fall asleep anywhere but in your bed)". Yes, it would seem his eyelids are starting to close. This kid was always all about logic.
